2017
This piece is a memoir for an old friend, Will Morva, who was executed by lethal injection in July 2017. Will was convicted of murder of two police officers in Blacksburg, Virginia in 2006 while trying to escape police custody on his way to sentencing for another crime. It was later Will was diagnosed with schizotypal personality disorder.
The piece contains letters that he sent to me, returned art that I sent to him, references to various types of execution, and detritus that I picked up along the railroad tracks that I was walking along in Montana at the moment of Will's execution in Virginia.
I later gifted this piece to Bryan Stevenson, Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative which works to help death row inmates seek clemency. As far as I know, this is now hanging in the offices of the EIJ.
